Easy Gluten-free Nut-free Apple Crumble

Every year we go apple picking as a family. It’s something we love to do with our kids to remind them that fruits actually come from trees and don’t only come from the grocery store, which is sadly something that is necessary when you live in a big city. My kids got a little over excited about picking apples off the trees, and now I have more apples than I know what to do with.

Luckily, I’ve found some great, allergy-friendly apple recipes that aren’t very time consuming or labor intensive so these apples will be used for more than just applesauce. I’ll definitely be making some Crockpot Apple Butter and One Bowl Apple Cake in the next few weeks.

My son asked me to make some apple pie, but I haven’t quite mastered a gluten-free, egg-free pie crust yet, so I decided to make a Gluten-free Nut-free Apple Crumble instead. It was easy to make, tasty and the crumble topping makes it taste even better than pie.

To make the filling, start with peeled and cored apples, and cut them into cubes. Toss apples in a mixing bowl and add lemon juice, sugar, maple syrup, vanilla extract, tapioca starch and cinnamon. Stir until apples are coated evenly.

To prepare the crumble topping, combine brown sugar, rolled oats, gluten-free flour mix, cinnamon and salt in a mixing bowl. Add vegan butter or coconut oil and mix well with a fork or your hands until the topping resembles breadcrumbs.

Assemble the Gluten-free Nut-free Apple Crumble by spreading the apple filling onto a greased 9×13 baking dish. Then spread the crumble mixture evenly on top of the apple filling.

This recipe can be made in advance. At this point you can cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate up to 2 days before baking, or place it in the freezer for longer storage (up to 4 weeks). When you are ready to bake the apple crumble, just allow the dish to thaw in the refrigerator overnight before baking.

Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes, until the apple filling is bubbling and the topping is golden.

Serve the dessert warm. It goes well with a side of Dairy-free Vanilla Maple Coconut Ice Cream or topped with dairy-free whipped cream.gf-apple-crumble
